Episode Number 83Tim Brechlin on Getting Weird with Work

Tim Brechlin is the Digital/Inbound Marketing Manager at WhatCounts, an email marketing provider that has a virtual team distributed throughout the country. For his part, Tim is located in Madison, Wisconsin. On his site, Tim calls himself The Intelligent Fool, a label he says he “shamelessly cribbed” from Albert Einstein. This helps him remember that we can only learn so much of what there is out there in the world. Let’s learn more about Tim.

Show Notes

To read Tim’s bio, you quickly learn that he is a lover of life, living, and fried cheese (the last of which may or may not be a side effect of hailing from the Midwest — from Chicago, Illinois, to Dubuque, Iowa, to Madison, Wisconsin, then to Baltimore, Maryland, and now back to Wisconsin). As a fellow Midwesterner, Nick and DJ couldn’t wait to learn more about how Tim does what he does.

Virtual teams aren’t easy. Which is why Tim and the WhatCounts team have put systems in place to help the distributed workforce collaborate and get things done effectively and efficiently. For starters, they aren’t bogged down by the typical Monday Morning Meeting. Instead, they’ve opted for a Tuesday meeting after the team has solved problems that may have arisen over the weekend.

Tim personally, doesn’t like meetings before 10 AM as he focuses this prime-time of productivity on his core tasks. He also has a philosophy that encourages people to Just Get Weird with It. The “It” being the work that needs to be done. “That’s the way we’ve always done it” shouldn’t be an answer we have to hear as much as we do these days. Tim challenges this with experimenting with new processes and “weird" solutions.

What Are the 3 Apps Tim Can’t Live Without? MLB At-Bat so he can track "how bad Cubs are doing” (his words!). He also likes the Calendar widget on the homepage of his Android phone as well as the University of Wisconsin’s BusRadar app that helps him keep moving as he shifts working locations during the day.
