Episode Number 86Nathan Latka on Scaling Creativity

At age 24, Heyo CEO and Founder Nathan Latka may be our youngest Work Talk Show guest yet. However, Nathan has quite a few accomplishments under his belt. After studying architecture, he pivoted when the housing market dropped off and began helping companies market themselves on Facebook. And that’s how Heyo was born. Just a few years later, they’ve expanded to 25 employees and seen 147% year-on-year growth. How does he do it? We’re glad you asked.

Show Notes

When he started Heyo, Nathan Latka didn’t know a lot about the nuts and bolts of development and coding. But he knew what he didn’t know, which helped him seek out two technical co-founders to bring his vision to life. Today most of Heyo’s team is made up of engineers with Nathan leading relationship marketing and sales.

Part of what makes this work team unique is their office space in Blacksburg, Virginia, which they designed to foster “collisions” to yield unexpected and often irreplaceable ideas and improvements. The one downside can be too much collaboration in the form of unwanted interruptions. That’s why Nathan protects his flow states by maximizing his prime working hours of 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM.

A challenge for any growing business is scaling creativity. To hone this competitive advantage, Latka voraciously reads biographies of business leaders such as Warren Buffet and Walt Disney. His learning doesn’t stop there. He makes notes on their routines and then spends the next few weeks replicating those rituals to internalize the lessons from these visionaries’ lives.
