Episode Number 72Matt Heinz on Working Unplugged

Matt Heinz is the founder of Heinz Marketing, a marketing agency that helps its clients all over the world to increase their sales pipelines and marketing strategies. He quit his job to start his own business right during the 2008 credit crunch without a specific blueprint for how he would chase success. The major factor he credits for his success is that he tries at all costs to avoid multitasking.

Show Notes

Matt Heinz is interested in how people work. Modeled on the series in Inc Magazine and from Lifehacker, Matt’s How I Work blog series outlines how he and other successful people get their work done effectively and efficiently. The secret sauce, not surprisingly, is working hard.

Matt is lucky in that he enjoys his work. That makes it easier to put in the time that’s necessary to do a good job, and he believes that this is a common thread for all successful people: they put the time in.

Moreover, he’s never been a multi-tasker. He forces himself to give his full attention to the task that is in front of him; if it’s a task he cares enough to do, then it’s one that deserves his full attention. You already know what you need to get done, and all those distractions take away from those priorities that are most important to you.

What are the 3 Apps Matt Can’t Live Without? Outlook Tasks is the core of the system he uses all day every day. The Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner and software are even more important than his computer for keeping himself organized. And, of course, MLB.tv so Matt can keep up to date with baseball.

Shout-outs and plugs! DJ gives the show’s first shout out to a baby to wish Jude Westergaard a happy 1st birthday in Nick’s absence. Matt wants to make sure you check out the How I Work section of his blog.

Until next week, we’ll see you on the Internet!
