Jon Miller leads strategy and execution for all aspects of Marketo’s communications, thought leadership, and content marketing programs. Before co-founding Marketo, Jon was VP of Product Marketing at Epiphany and held positions at Exchange Partners and Gemini Consulting. In 2010, The CMO Institute named Jon a Top 10 CMO for companies under $250 million revenue. In addition to all of this, Miller is DJ’s boss! We couldn’t wait to hear how Jon gets it all done.
Born in Ethiopia because he “wanted to be near his parents,” Jon Miller arrived at a career in marketing by way of a left-brain analytical orientation. And it doesn’t get more left-brained than studying physics at Harvard! As Nick heard during Jon’s “7 Minutes of Awesome” at the MarketingProfs B2B Forum, Miller is fond of talking about what physics taught him about marketing. This structure has also taught him quite a lot about how he works as well, as he has a few left-brained work habits. For example, Miller is a big believer in the Five Dynamics or energies that make up a team — Explore (brainstorming), Excite (communications), Examine (structure, planning), Execute, and Evaluation. Jon notes that he is heavily grounded in the Examine and Execute dynamics. Miller notes that one can easily employ these dynamics in assembling highly effective teams, though he is quick to caution you not to hire other people like yourself. Rather, look for those energies and skills that compliment and offset your own. He also spent some time talking about the role of culture at growing companies. What three apps can’t Jon live without? Buffer, Marketo, and Salesforce.com. For shout-outs and shameless plugs, Nick mentioned one of his favorite podcasts, Jay Baer’s Social Pros. DJ gave a shout to a new podcast he's starting at Marketo called the Marketing Nation Podcast, which launches Tuesday, November 5th with their first guest Ann Handley. Jon also wanted to remind listeners to grab a copy of his free ebook with DJ, The Definitive Guide to Email Marketing. Until next week, we'll see you on the Internet!
