Dorie Clark is a marketing strategy consultant, professional speaker, and frequent contributor to the Harvard Business Review and Forbes. Recognized as a “branding expert” by the Associated Press and Fortune, she is the author of Reinventing You: Define Your Brand, Imagine Your Future, which is being translated into Russian, Chinese, French, Polish, and Thai. She also consults for diverse clients and is an adjunct professor of business at Duke.

As DJ is a former teacher and Nick is currently an adjunct lecturer at the University of Iowa, we both have a special place in our hearts for educators. In addition to her work at Duke, Dorie has taught marketing and communications at Tufts University, Suffolk University, Emerson College, HEC-Paris, Babson College, the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler School of Business, and Smith College Executive Education.

How does she toggle between academia and the corporate world? For her, it’s easy as she is a “professor of practice” meaning she can teach in bursts on the Duke campus between consulting, speaking, and writing. With all of these various tasks to content with, Dorie has found success “batching” them.

Simply put, this means she focuses on a specific group of similar tasks at the same time. For example, if she has client meetings she groups these together. Writing happens on days reserved for creative work. Not surprisingly, we were recording on a “podcast day” when she was recording three other interviews! She also talked about preparing for speaking engagements and we referenced the free ebook Slidedocs by future WTS guest Nancy Duarte.
