Episode Number 32David Shaw on Defining Work

“Work is no longer a place — it’s something we do.” With this striking new definition, we kicked off a fascinating chat with David Shaw, Workplace Technology Specialist at 404, that covered productive office spaces, introverts vs. extroverts, meeting rules, and more. The world of work has changed dramatically and yet our physical work environments still suffer from stationary constructs. Luckily, Shaw has a few ideas on that.

Show Notes

It was a week of firsts at The Work Talk Show. As a Workplace Technology Specialist based in Kent in the United Kingdom, David Shaw of 404 Team Ltd. is not only the first international guest we've had on the podcast. He's also the first guest to specialize in workplace environment design.

After a career in IT, it was a stint with an Italian office furniture company that led Shaw to the design side of the workplace. As can be suspected, going from IT to design was quite the journey. Bottom line? While the industrial revolution is over, our work places haven't changed much. We still have rows and rows of desks and cubicles.

Furthermore, smartphones have enhanced things even more, as many can now get email and perform key task from anywhere — not just their desk. So what should our work stations look like? You'll have to listen for David's answer. Spoiler Alert: He's not saying that you shouldn't have physical offices. In fact, Shaw's team has a rather innovative approach (BYOD — Bring Your Own Device!) and space for their face-to-face team meetings.

For shout-outs and shameless plugs, Nick gave a shout to his Social Strategy Boot Camp workshop series in Madison, Davenport, and Omaha, with a special promo code — worktalk — that gets listeners of the show the best rate. DJ gave a shout to Kevin Traver while David mentioned "The Sales Lion" himself, Marcus Sheridan, and the work they do reimagining the workplace at 404.

Until next week, we'll see you on the Internet!
